Prologue

The purple-blue lights of the bus stop glowed brightly, pairing perfectly with the kaleidoscope of stars in the night sky. They invited my cheeks to flush as Mr. Orion's melodious laughter broke the silence. We were on our way home after we finished tutoring middle school students.

"It's cold, isn't it, Karina?" he asked with a chuckle, both hands tucked into his jacket pockets. My nose flared as I tried to suppress my blushing; my hands were busy rubbing together, searching for warmth.

The wind continued to gust, carried by passing cars. It sent a chill that seemed to tear at my nails and skin. It pulled my shoes forward to close the distance. My body froze, my lips remained sealed. Even as his shoes also moved to close the gap.

I felt like closing my eyes. My heart felt like it was being stirred around; I wanted to die right then and there. He was so close that my senses could even catch the scent lingering on his breath. Aish! The scent of candy.

The glare of bus headlights approached. For some reason, I felt a sense of unease when the bus doors swung open quickly.

My name is Karina. I am seventeen years old. I am close to my teacher, Mr. Orion, who is twenty-seven. Is it okay for me to like him?

How did we become close? Perhaps that needs to be told.
